Rules for Redirections of Richard Bull’s Improvisational Structures and/or Richard Bull Dance Theatre Dances

If you are interested in reconstructing a dance or improvisational structure by Richard Bull, please contact us at dance@improvarts.com. IAE has a form that anyone wanting to do a reconstruction must submit, along with a $25 fee for processing and materials. Please tell us what dance you would like to redirect, the rehearsal dates, performance dates, and company name and/or dancers/choreographers involved. This is for our archival purposes. You are required to submit one VHS copy of the performance upon completion of your project. IAE, in turn, is required to try and coordinate a visit to one of your rehearsals from an approved IAE redirection coach. The availability of the coach and the circumstances of logistics would of course play a role; we might not be able to get someone to you, but we would try.

We would also provide you with a package including:

*VHS copy of RBDT performing the requested dance
* A written scenario, if there is one
*Program Notes, if available
*Any other writing materials available with regard to the dance requested.

For coming to us and working with an IAE coach, you would receive an official IAE Redirection Logo that states:
"Redirected with the assistance of Improvisational Arts Ensembles, Inc., & an RBDT Rep Redirection Coach"

The main thing is to begin to truly embrace the notion of a redirection vs. a reconstruction. As Richard used to say, if the scenario is "clear" then the dance is what it's meant to be. We will all work to be truly vigilant about the clarity of the scenario, and about the techniques used to actualize the scenario. But each company will have its own chemistry, physicality, and underlying emphasis, which will inevitably make the dance re-directed. The goal is not, for example, to use the movement style of the original RBDT trio, or to recreate the same chemistry of later constellations of the company, but rather to find the dance through the structure - again.
